Age Concerns merge to meet the growing need for older people in Hawke’s Bay.

Two local Age Concerns merge to broaden service delivery, provide improved services and meet the growing need for older people in Hawke’s Bay.

For several years local Age Concerns have identified the need to work collaboratively and use the limited resources available to community groups more effectively. These discussions have also been supported by local funders and stakeholders.

Following many months of work by Age Concern Hawke’s Bay and Age Concern Havelock North to prepare a merge proposal, Special General Meetings were held in June. With the support of the Financial Members the two organisations passed resolutions to amalgamate Age Concern Havelock North with Age Concern Hawke’s Bay.

The two organisations officially merged in September 2023 to provide a new vision for older persons services in Hastings, Havelock North, and Central Hawke’s Bay under the name Age Concern Hawke’s Bay.

Christine Renata, Chairperson of Age Concern Hawke’s Bay says, “this merge represents the start of a new and exciting chapter for our organisation and how we best serve the needs of older people in our community.” “We acknowledge that the Board and the Members of Age Concern Havelock North have trusted us with this precious taonga, one with a long and significant history that has served the people of Havelock North so well. We will hold this taonga close, value its past and commit to its future.”

Former Age Concern Havelock North Chairperson Wayne Bradshaw says “The board of Age Concern Havelock North is proud to merger with Age Concern Hawke’s Bay to broaden the service deliveries into the village and raise the importance of recognising what older people bring to our communities. It is important that every older person feels connected, has positive choices, and can age well. Our communities are stronger working together.”

Age Concern Hawke’s Bay will be looking to expand services in Havelock North and will also be continuing the annual tradition of a Christmas Day Lunch for older people, that was originally started by Age Concern Havelock North. This is a free event that is supported by the Hastings District Council and many local businesses and volunteers.

A free community Christmas Lunch for people 60 years and older who are alone or find this time of year challenging. Delivery is also available for those who are unable to leave their home due to health or mobility reasons. Limited Numbers - Registered Guests only. Transport available. Age Concern Hawke's Bay are very pleased to announce that we are hosting the CHB Active Ageing Expo in conjunction with the International Day of the Older Persons Celebration in Waipukurau on September 21st, 2023.

Our Expo/Celebration has been planned for older persons and their families who at times struggle with not knowing “what’s out there for seniors”. Our aim is to bring together under one roof service providers and other organisations (e.g. clubs) from around Hawke's Bay to present a wide array of interesting and informative displays representing all facets of today's lifestyles for older people. The expo will provide the older community opportunity to find out about service providers and other organisations available to them in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.

Location is the Centralines Sports Complex in Waipukurau from 10am-1pm. Entrance next to the Scout Hall. Free entry and morning tea provided. Goody bags for the first 200 attendees.

Age Concern has officially launched its new logo - What do you think? If you would like to know more about why Age Concern NZ have changed the logo and branding, call into one of our local offices to pick up a copy of the "Age Concern My Story" booklet. Age Concern NZ have put these together for Members.

Winter has certainly made its presence known over the last month with the colder weather and unfortunately increased winter illness. You can do some simple things to protect yourself against winter illness so make sure to read on to learn more about staying well this winter!

July Newsletter: A New Look For Age Concern

Age Concern New Zealand has been working in the background on giving the Age Concern brand a new look. It is with great excitement that we will be officially able to share this with you next month!!

On July the 1st your local office will join Age Concern New Zealand in using a new logo. Our name will remain the same, alongside our contact details and services. You will notice that we will have new signage going up over the month of July and the newsletter, pamphlets and our posters will have a new look.

We will also be launching our Website in July and this will be a great resource for those in the community wanting to learn more about Age Concern HB and the services we provide.
